TIGHT FIT: FRANK OCEAN

[Frank in Supreme]

The other day I had a scary thought – What if Frank Ocean has completely quit music? His excellent debut album Channel Orange was released in July 2012, nearly 3 years and 4 months ago. In the current musical climate, that’s a long time to wait before releasing a new project. While the media and sources close to Ocean claim that his new album (reportedly called Boys Don’t Cry) is finished and will be out “soon”, November 1st is here and it’s still quiet.

Before completely giving over to this depressing possibility, let’s shift the focus to his incredible style.

While mixing high end fashion with streetwear is certainly nothing new (in fact now days it’s ubiquitous), seeing it executed well is still a rarity. Enter Frank; who in my opinion, wholeheartedly personifies this trend.

As a decidedly enigmatic figure in music and beyond, Ocean hints to aspects of his personality through his style choices. Continue reading

Avalon’s tattoo style is playful, feminine and fun, which makes her a highly sought after artist. She is currently working at The Grand Illusion in Malvern, VIC. LISTEN: MNDSGN – YAWN ZEN

mndsgn

MNDSGN is a Los Angeles based Filipino/American producer on the very eclectic Stones Throw roster. While his work has a lot of the dreamy elements which have become synonymous with living and creating in LA, he delves a little deeper into darkness than many of his peers. On top of this, there is a decidedly bouncy sway to much of his output. Yawn Zen will wake you up, then rock you back into a dreamy slumber.

Very gooey.

A QUICK CHAT WITH: ESTHER STEPHENS

Muli-talented Kiwi beauty, Esther Stephens is a force to be reckoned with. I met her properly last year in Melbourne but I was already more than familiar with that face and voice thanks to a little TV show called Go Girls (On air for 5 seasons – HOLLA!), collaborations with Young, Gifted, & Broke, and her consistent presence in both the New Zealand and Melbourne music scenes.

Esther makes being multi-faceted look effortless. A captivating singer AND actress, if you are lucky enough to catch her in either one of her artistic realms, the unbridled passion she shows for creative expression is inspiring and palpable.

Her latest musical project involves another trio of amazing Kiwis known as The Means. Together they are Esther Stephens & The Means – aka The greatest thing to happen your eardrums in a minute. The music is a refreshingly seamless fusion of soul, funk, pop, jazz, psychedelia; basically just a beautiful celebration of beats, rhymes, & life.
