TIGHT FIT: PHOEBE PHILO

Philo for Vogue, 2013

Phoebe Philo may not be a household name to the general public, but if you are interested in fashion, chances are you are familiar with this reserved and revered power woman who is the current creative director for French fashion house, Céline.

Phoebe is widely adored and respected within fashion circles for a number of reasons – Perhaps most prominent is her personal style and the quiet confidence she exudes through the way she dresses – She is often seen in well-tailored trousers, low cut Stan Smith sneakers, a good quality, plain t-shirt or button up, topped off with a slightly oversized blazer or beautiful wool coat. Her personal taste has a very obvious influence on the clothing she has designed for Céline – Her collections thus far have been largely uncomplicated, with clean lines, classic silhouettes, and a subtle, masculine influence.

INTRODUCING: DAN ROBERTS

I met Dan, a fellow young New Zealander living in Melbourne, just a couple of months ago at a mutual friend’s party. Since then I’ve been a keen follower of his work. There is an impressive element of calm in the beautiful images he captures, depicting some of the most stylish people in the world. His shots – largely candid – give the viewer clues about a given scene but also leave room for questioning or interpretation which I believe is an important part of what makes a good photographer. Dan has this astounding gift for capturing a subject’s serenity and grace, all while conveying the real movement in a moment.

In the last 5 years, we have witnessed the sudden and drastic rise in popularity of Street Style Photography, partnered with an ever-increasing blogging culture, meaning fashion is now more accessible than ever – Overall this is a huge plus, but it also comes with some negatives. Suddenly style itself is harder to characterise or even recognise because we are flooded with pictures of the same things day in, day out. Street Style imagery is a great tool in keeping things fresh and genuine because it involves real people, in real situations. It’s fashion in the field; Fashion on the ground. Street Style can be a constant and ever-renewing source of inspiration, but this is all dependent on a gifted photographer with their own eye for style and innovation.

INTRODUCING: CLÉMENT PASCAL

27 year old Clément Pascal, born in Paris and now residing in New York City, is not just another man with a camera – He is a man with an eye; A style and artistic signature. He has an astounding gift for capturing calm, warmth, and serenity. In a city like NYC; full to the brim with talented aspiring photographers, what has helped him stand out? Why did Complex Magazine list him as a Young Photographer to Watch? What is it about his work that holds the interest of Fashion, Music, and Journalistic heavy-weights like ACNE Studios, Alexander Wang, Urban Outfitters, Dazed & Confused Magazine, Acclaim Magazine, The New York Times? If we are being honest with ourselves, in 2014 artistic talent and high work output often aren’t enough to propel you into the big leagues, especially big leagues such as these – So what else is it? In a sense, I believe this certain “x-factor”, or “je ne sais quoi” is something that can’t be articulated. Something you just know when you see, particularly in a photographer. More than just talent, you have to bring a fresh view. Your perspective and the way you portray people, products, buildings, landscapes – whatever it is – has to help sell an idea, or communicate some kind of message.
