LISTEN: SHANTAN WANTAN ICHIBAN – KANYE MIX

Another one of my favourite mixes via the homeboy Shantan from Sydney. This was originally premiered on Triple J last year to commemorate Kanye’s visit down under.

Regardless of your thoughts on him as a person, Kanye demands respect through his dense and vast body of work. Listen to any of his beats and it is clear there is an unmistakable creativity to the way in which they are created. His knowledge of music is deep, and because of this, his sample selection is expert.

Since his foray into music back in the mid-nineties, he has been responsible for copious musical trends – ie. Speeding up the vocal pitching of a classic soul record? If Kanye didn’t invent that, he certainly popularised it. Because much of his early work reflects this style, digging into the origins of a Yeezy beat uncovers myriad sonic gems.

Not convinced? Check the mix and tracklist below:

TIGHT FIT: YASIIN BEY

As impatient young people who grew up in an era of instantaneity, we are constantly bombarded with clichés like “good things take time”, or “it’ll be better soon”; In other words, “shut up and wait.”

Generally speaking, these phrases are thrown around in reference to fine wine or the resell value of #rare Nikes. However in some cases, a person’s style can not only evolve, but also significantly improve with years of experience.

Case in point: The untouchable Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) absolutely killing the fashion game at 40. Seriously, is there any look this man can’t pull off with that recognisable, inimitable swag? The beauty in his aesthetic is that it’s cool without evident effort; it’s him without needing to be showy. In the last 2-3 years (basically since he started publicly declaring himself ‘Yasiin’ rather than ‘Mos’) he has truly emerged in fashionable circles as an unexpected icon.

SAMPLING IN HIP HOP – THE 17 BEST OF KANYE WEST

[Creative Source – I’d Find You Anywhere – 1976: Sampled on ‘Wouldn’t Get Far’ – The Game ft. Kanye West – 2006]

Kanye West may be the most polarizing artist of our generation. It seems every move he makes has the media in uproar and someone on the internet mad enough to churn out these hilariously cruel memes with passionate finesse. He has pop culture and society completely divided. His brand doesn’t come with a moderate setting, and that is apparent in the public perception of him – You either love him or you hate him.

I love him. I always have.
