LISTEN: BBC RADIO 1

Flying Lotus:

Kaytranada:

Two of my favourites are back at it with the fire for BBC Radio 1’s Thursday night residencies. In this recent run, Flying Lotus takes us through an insane mix including Thom Yorke, Bjork, Aphex Twin, and Portishead, and even has a special guest on the air – fellow LA producer Gaslamp Killer.

Montreal’s Kaytranada serves up some greatness – Shalamar, Kali Uchis, Mac Demarco, The Isley Brothers, and Knxwledge.

SONG OF THE DAY

Judging by the amount of new music, features, mixes, djing, and touring he’s been doing lately, I think it’s safe to say Montreal producer, Kaytranada probably hasn’t slept in a year. To top that off, 2015 is already shaping up to belong to him and his team – and rightfully so.

This melodic and bouncy club tune featuring Chi-town’s Vic Mensa (their 2nd full-length collab – see also Wimme Nah), was uploaded to SoundCloud only 1 day ago and already boasts nearly 300k listens.

Sit back and watch the takeover.

INTRODUCING: TENTACLE.

Aptly named Canadian-guitar-playing-beat-maker, ‘Tentacle.’ makes some of the most dark, beautiful, and soothing sounds I’ve heard in a long time. Just one listen will tell you exactly why this musical pseudonym is gracefully fitting – His creations seem to float, ripple, and glisten, much like the multiple arms of our ocean dwelling friends.

Truly uncompromising, Tentacle. doesn’t often stray too far from his perfect artistic formula which sounds like a funky D’Angelo guitar solo on lean mixed in with some trap drums, and finished off with that taste of jazz or soul you might hear in the dark corners of a late night poetry cafe. The recipe is without flaw. Already amazing as stand-alone instrumentals, his beats also sound just as at home beneath chopped and screwed Waka or Kanye raps, as well as under his own singing voice. (A new thing he’s trying, and obviously finessing)
