pseuBoard is hands down my favourite new app – [Note: I may be bias] Because it was created by one of my best friends, Astley Lee, I’ve had access to it in all its different manifestations for the last few months. The latest update to the app improves the ease of use dramatically and it is now ready to be shared with the world.

Put simply, pseuBoard is a .gif sharing application but what makes it unique and exceptional is that it presents as a keyboard which can be added alongside your regular/emoji-boards, therefore the gifs are as accessible as typing a word or set of *heart-eye* emojis.

On top of ease and accessibility, the true winning element is the assortment of gifs Astley has collected for use – There is something for everyone and beyond that, there’s a clever/smart-ass way to answer any of your friend’s texts. Seriously. Most of the 100+ gifs on the app are #rare and will truly have your friends impressed while in fits of laughter. Over the last few months, I’ve had countless “wow”, “you’re the gif queen”, and “how do you do it!?” responses to my gif-filled rants.

I guess my secrets out. Oh well.

Another one of my favourite mixes via the homeboy Shantan from Sydney. This was originally premiered on Triple J last year to commemorate Kanye’s visit down under.

Regardless of your thoughts on him as a person, Kanye demands respect through his dense and vast body of work. Listen to any of his beats and it is clear there is an unmistakable creativity to the way in which they are created. His knowledge of music is deep, and because of this, his sample selection is expert.

Since his foray into music back in the mid-nineties, he has been responsible for copious musical trends – ie. Speeding up the vocal pitching of a classic soul record? If Kanye didn’t invent that, he certainly popularised it. Because much of his early work reflects this style, digging into the origins of a Yeezy beat uncovers myriad sonic gems.

Not convinced? Check the mix and tracklist below:

Continent Number 6 – Afromerica
Kanye West – Power (feat. Dwele)
Watch The Throne (Kanye x Jay Z) – Gotta Have It
Ponderosa Twins Plus One – Bound
Kanye West – Bound 2

In honour of my first ever visit to the Chi, here is a playlist of some of my favourite music birthed by people from this city.

Chicago sounds have always held a special place in my heart because there is a level of diversity in the stories which escape the confines of this city and enter our worlds which doesn’t seem to exist as notably anywhere else.

Chicago – Keep doing you, we love you.

The rest of you – Enjoy.

Love him or hate him, Kanye West understands culture. He understands that in order to shift culture and veer public minds into futuristic thinking, you must take risks. He understands that if you want to connect with the youth, you need to use the youth; learn from the youth.

These last two months have been intriguing as we have watched him make his return to music with four very different sonic offerings – First it was the stripped back, melodic, and heart-wrenching Only One featuring an emotional Kanye singing, with Sir Paul McCartney on the keys.

He followed that with another McCartney assisted track, FourFiveSeconds, this time adding Rihanna’s fiery vocals to juxtapose the simplicity of the folk-infused instrumental.

Kanye West has a lot to smile about lately – A lucrative and creatively satisfying deal with Adidas, a loving marriage which, despite what we think of the pairing, seems to make him truly happy, and a beautiful little girl to bring him calm and balance.

The Spike Jonze directed video features a rugged up Kanye and North spending some quality time on an overcast day in the country-side. The song was released on New Years Day and features Sir Paul McCartney on the keys. It is written from the perspective of Kanye’s late mother, Donda, and reads like a letter of love and encouragement to her son, and his new daughter.
