LISTEN: SHANTAN WANTAN ICHIBAN – OUTKAST MIX

With a career spanning two decades, Outkast are stalwarts of the rap game. (I personally have trouble trusting people who don’t listen to them.) As pioneers within hip hop, they championed some of the very first instances of genre fusion, adopting elements of G-funk (first popularised in the West) and mixing that with gritty Southern attitude. If the Pixies are the most influential rock band in the world, Outkast are the reason your favourite rapper picked up a pen. Their impact is immeasurable, and their style ubiquitous. With countless hits across 6 albums, the resume is thick. My homie Shantan from Sydney made this dope mix last year featuring the bangers, as well as some of the lesser-known tracks and verses.

Start your weekend right.

“This was originally created to replicate the feeling ‘we used to feel’ growing up as kids making our own mixtapes from songs that played on the radio. You would never get the full song from beginning to end, you would sometimes get some radio interference, commercials, etc. So of course you will hear some skips, pops, abrupt cuts and radio noise. That’s what made it beautiful.” – Erick

SONG OF THE WEEK

‘Breathing Underwater’ is the first release from Hiatus Kaiyote’s upcoming LP Choose Your Weapon, out May 5th. The Melbourne soul collective have been making significant noise locally as well as overseas for the last few years, even earning a Grammy nomination for their beautiful collaboration with Q-Tip, ‘Nakamarra.’

Their latest effort doesn’t disappoint; There is something rhythmic and enticing about this single, the incredible voice of Nai Palm taking you on a sonic journey through unpredictable and hypnotising terrain. The sound is layered and technical without ever losing it’s soul.

NEW MUSIC: KALI UCHIS

In preparation for her nine track EP dropping tomorrow, the beautiful and generous Kali Uchis has made the whole project entitled Por Vida available for streaming right now.

I was lucky enough to chat to Kali on the phone and hear a few of these unreleased tracks at the start of last month via her friend and manager, Henny, and was immediately struck with the impression that not only was this EP going to be something special, but also that Kali Uchis herself was about to get the recognition and support she truly deserved.

Her remarkable sound, voice, and style are key factors in what sets her apart in the music game of today. She draws from the 1960s and 1970s when it comes to her personal aesthetic and this also carries over to her music. She creates sounds which are elegant, polished, and poignantly honest.

NEW MUSIC: PHONY PPL

Brooklyn six piece, Phony Ppl, are all I’ve been bumping for the last two weeks. (Shout out to the all-knowing Matt for putting me on.) Their recent digital release Yesterday’s Tomorrow has distinct components of nu-jazz, R&B, soul, and hip-hop.

While fusing genres is nothing new in 2015, refreshingly, their music relays to listeners a potent feeling of infectious live energy that is sorely lacking in today’s musical climate.

Clearly influenced by the likes of Pharrell and early N.E.R.D, they have also been compared to The Internet (who they are friends with), and tend to remind me of a more jazzy, east coast, OverDoz.
