EVENT: HUGO MATHIAS ART SHOW @ E55

[Hugo at work via Instagram]

“I have created a series of works exploring themes of age & wisdom. Translated from my head to the canvas, I have created characters who haven’t had the best of luck. For them, most things haven’t worked out. They’re old boys with old stories. They’re pensive pensioners. The seen-it-all seniors.
Painted with vibrant colour and composed in the historical tradition of portraiture usually reserved for important people, I have tried to convey the importance of society’s unimportant, and the value of their wisdom that can only come with age.” – Hugo

APP OF THE MONTH: PSEUBOARD

pseuBoard is hands down my favourite new app – [Note: I may be bias] Because it was created by one of my best friends, Astley Lee, I’ve had access to it in all its different manifestations for the last few months. The latest update to the app improves the ease of use dramatically and it is now ready to be shared with the world.

Put simply, pseuBoard is a .gif sharing application but what makes it unique and exceptional is that it presents as a keyboard which can be added alongside your regular/emoji-boards, therefore the gifs are as accessible as typing a word or set of *heart-eye* emojis.

On top of ease and accessibility, the true winning element is the assortment of gifs Astley has collected for use – There is something for everyone and beyond that, there’s a clever/smart-ass way to answer any of your friend’s texts. Seriously. Most of the 100+ gifs on the app are #rare and will truly have your friends impressed while in fits of laughter. Over the last few months, I’ve had countless “wow”, “you’re the gif queen”, and “how do you do it!?” responses to my gif-filled rants.

I guess my secrets out. Oh well.

[My personal favourite .gif from the app]

pseuBOARD iOS Keyboard is now available in the App Store – COP UP FAM!

(Big up to Ast for including a DOVE’S DIARY .gif on the app! Love you bro.)

LISTEN: PODCAST – HOW NOT TO BE AN A**HOLE

[Dan, Dom, Todd – Photo by Cameron Robinson]

My friend Todd Williams (Louie Knuxx) has been running an hour long weekly podcast with fellow New Zealanders, Dominic Hoey (Tourettes), and Dan Mawby. While Dan exists mostly in the background as the technical wizard, Todd and Dom tackle the airwaves with their own brand of unique and refreshing candour. Both men are exceptionally informed and hilarious, which makes for some interesting dialogue.

Each week they feature a different guest or guests, and cover a wide range of topics, with nothing excluded as too sacred. They are now 21 episodes in, and have spoken with politicians, police, bloggers, rappers, and athletes.

WORDS #5

For Rema Olugbala–Youngblood

They think they killed you.
But I saw you yesterday,
standing with your hands in your pockets
waiting for the real deal to go down.
I saw you smiling your “fuck it” smile, blood in your eyes,
your heart pumping freedom
Youngblood!

They think they killed you.
But i saw you yesterday
in the playground.
Black skin, sweaty, shiny,
hurling your ball bomb into the hoop
right on target.
Won’t be no game next time
cause you ain’t hardly playing.

They think they killed you.
But i saw you yesterday
with your back against the wall,
muscles bulging against the chains,
eyes absorbing truth.
Lips speaking it.
Heart learning how to love.
Head learning who to hate.
Blood ready to flow
towards freedom.
Youngblood!

Youngbloods ain’t got no blood to waste
in no syringes, on no barroom floors,
in no strange lands
delaying other youngbloods’ freedom.
We don’t need no tired blood.
No anemic blood. No blood clots
in our new body.

They think they killed you.
But i saw you yesterday.
All them youngbloods
musta gave you a transfusion.
All that strong blood.
All that rich blood.
All that angry blood
flowing through your veins
toward tomorrow.
